avast! Server Edition
avast! 4 Server Edition offers the most powerful protection to fight virus infections on your server or servers. It works both as primary protection of a file server itself, and, via its optional plug-ins, as protection for various server subsystems, such as electronic mail or firewall/proxy. Currently, the following plugins (editions) are available:

MS Exchange Server 2000/2003/2007
MS Proxy/ISA Server
SMTP Server
MS Sharepoint Server (including Office Sharepoint Server 2007)
Antivirus Kernel
The latest version of avast! antivirus kernel features world-class detection abilities together with high performance (data throughput). You can expect 100% detection of In-the-Wild viruses and Trojan horses.

The kernel is certified by ICSA and the product frequently takes part in the tests of Virus Bulletin magazine, yielding multiple VB100% awards.

Direct Cluster and Terminal Services support
avast! 4 Server Edition is ready to work and even supports large cluster and terminal servers. It contains direct support for cluster setup, including a special wizard that makes the installation on cluster easier.

To set up avast! on terminal environment, you can use another wizard that guides you through the reconfiguration of avast! system for the work in terminal mode. Such a reconfigured avast! system looks (and behaves) to the terminal users as the standard avast! would for workstations.

The support for the terminals is not limited to the terminal services by Microsoft; it is fully functional with Citrix MetaFrame system as well.

Integration with the Operating System
avast! 4 Server Edition has been fully tested with all editions of Windows Servers (starting with NT 4.0 and up to Windows Server 2008, including Windows Storage Server 2003 and Windows Datacenter Server 2008). It is fully optimized to take advantage of multiple CPUs and has been stress-tested even on machines with a large number of processors to verify exceptional robustness and scalability of its technology.

Special care has been taken to ensure 100% compatibility with advanced server components such as the VSS (volume shadow copy) and FRS (file replication services), guaranteeing that your server will run flawlessly under all circumstances.

64-bit support
avast! 4 Server Edition works perfectly even on IA-64 and AMD-64 based machines. It is one of the very few AV solutions on the market that covers this fast-emerging platform that is likely to gain more and more importance in the upcoming years. More information you may found on page avast! Antivirus and Windows x64 Edition.

Resident Protection
Resident protection which is the real-time protection on the computer, is one of the most important parts of an antivirus program today. avast! features a powerful resident module that is able to detect the virus before it has any chance to infect your computer.

The file system protection ensures that no virus will be executed on startup, and no virus will be even uploaded to it. The default settings of the resident protection are accommodated to the server environment - it provides thorough scanning. It is possible to adjust the settings to your requirements; you can specify to scan the copied files, or just files with given set of extensions, etc.

An important new feature is so-called "semi-silent" mode of operation. The purpose is to correctly display virus warnings on a server system. It works like this: if a request to load an infected file comes from a network, an automatic action is taken and nothing is displayed. On the other hand, when the request comes from a local or terminal session, the usual interactive mode is used - as in desktop antivirus.

The resident module is highly optimized for speed and tested even in heavy load. It fully utilizes the possibilities of today's powerful servers, such as multiple CPUs (the scanning can be parallelized).

Developed especially to use on Terminal Server, avast! 4 Server Edition contains additional resident modules for e-mail protection (Outlook/Exchange, Internet Mail) and browser protection (Script Blocker).

User Interface
Even though the Server Edition contains both the user environments of avast! - simple and enhanced - in server usage usually the enhanced user interface will be employed (except for the terminal server). The enhanced user interface gives you access to all the settings of avast!, thus making it possible to fully configure it for extensive scanning.

The main principle is so called "antivirus task" based scanning. First, you define the tasks used to scan for viruses, including the common parameters. Then, you run these tasks (probably periodically). Every task generates some results; of course, you can work with these results afterwards. Resident protection is also a special type of task.

Another feature, closely connected with tasks, is the Scheduler. It makes it possible to schedule the start of a particular task, both one-time and periodically.

Notification Manager
To make work easier, Server Edition contains a special notification manager. Here, you can define notification objects and associate them with antivirus tasks (both resident and on-demand). Those notification objects are used in the case when a virus is found.

The new version supports a number of notification objects, such as sending e-mail messages using SMTP or MAPI (Outlook) Also supported are; SMS as well, notification using the Windows popup mechanism (network message), printing the message on a network printer, SNMP traps, or even sending IM messages using MSN/Windows Messenger.

Automatic Updates
Automatic updates are another key point in virus protection, both the virus database and the program itself can be updated automatically. The updates are incremental, and only new data is downloaded, thus reducing the transfer time. The typical size of a virus database update is approximately of 20-80kb, the program update usually has approximately 200-500kb.

If your Internet connection is persistent, the updates are performed completely automatically in fixed time intervals. If you connect to the Internet only occasionally, avast! watches your connection and tries to perform the update when you are online.

Push Updates
A special feature of the Server Edition is PUSH updates. It is a dramatic change in the philosophy of updates, usually every installed program checks periodically and when a new version is available downloads it. PUSH updates however are initialized by our servers; they result in your computer quickly responding and performing the necessary update. The system is based on the SMTP protocol. The updates themselves are controlled by the avast! resident e-mail providers (MS Outlook and Internet Mail).

The whole system is protected by asymmetric ciphers and is resistant to unauthorized misuse.

Virus Chest
The Chest can be thought of as a Quarantine area on your disk having special properties that make it a safe isolated place suitable for storing certain files. You can work with the files in the Chest with security restrictions.

The main properties of the Virus Chest are complete isolation from the rest of the operating system.

Boot-time scan
A special avast! feature is the boot-time scan. It is important in the case of suspect that there might be an active virus on the computer. The boot-time scan is performed during the start of the operating system, before the virus can get loaded/activated - thus preventing the virus from spreading or taking actions to avoid being detected.

Command-line Scanner
Experienced users may like another Server Edition feature which is the command-line scanner. The scanning can be controlled by many arguments and switches; it can be used as a pipe filter, also a special STDIN/STDOUT mode is available.

The module is intended to be used in BATCH programs. Its output is the same as the output from the Enhanced User Interface tasks (including the report files).

Anti-spyware built-in
Spyware is software installed on a computer that is designed to collect information about the computer user, often without their knowledge or consent. This can result in so called identity theft, or theft of valuable information (e.g. bank or credit card details) or proprietary business data. Spyware is often developed by organized crime rings rather than lone individuals and may be installed by a virus.

Certified by West Coast Lab's Checkmark process, avast! has full anti-spyware capabilities built-in, to make your protection even more complete.

Anti-rootkit built-in
Rootkits are programs that install on your computer while keeping themselves and their activities hidden to remain invisible to the use. They represent a significant security risk on both home computers and company networks and are notoriously difficult to find and remove. Rootkits themselves are normally installed by a virus or other type of malware infection and it is therefore highly recommended that computer users have up to date antivirus/anti-spyware software installed and running on their computer. One such system is avast! antivirus.

Based on the class-leading GMER technology, avast! can now scan your live system for rootkit infections; no boots disks are required. If a rootkit is discovered, it is initially disabled and then if it can be safely removed without affecting the performance of the computer, it is removed. avast! antivirus includes a virus database which can be automatically updated to provide continuous protection against rootkits.

Strong self-protection
Some viruses may attempt to switch off a computer's antivirus software. To help keep your protection working, even against the latest threats that may try to disable your security protection, avast! has best-in-class strong self-protection built in, to make sure, no matter what you face, avast! carries on protecting your valuable data and programs. This is based on the multi-award winning avast! antivirus technology and provides an extra layer of security to ensure your data and programs are always protected.

Web Shield
Web Shield is a unique feature of avast! that enables it to monitor and filter all HTTP traffic coming from Web sites on the Internet. Since an increasing number of viruses (and other malware, such as adware, spyware and dialers) are being distributed via the World Wide Web, the need for effective countermeasures has also increased. Web Shield acts as a transparent HTTP proxy and is compatible with all major web browsers, including Microsoft Internet Explorer, FireFox, Mozilla and Opera.

Unlike most competitive solutions, Web Shield's impact on browsing speed is almost negligible. This is because of a unique feature called "Intelligent Stream Scan" that lets the Web Shield module scan objects on-the-fly, without the need of caching. Stream scanning is performed in operating memory only (without the necessity to flush the contents to disk), providing maximum possible throughput.

avast! Distributed Network Manager
avast! Distributed Network Manager (ADNM) represents a suite of powerful tools designed to help network administrators manage other avast! antivirus products installed on the network.

Its unrivaled flexibility and scalability makes it an ideal solution for networks of any size, from simple small-business networks up to large heterogenous networks spanning multiple continents. The ADNM system consists of the following components:

avast! Management Server (AMS)
SQL Database
Administration Console

These three components work together with the avast! antivirus products deployed on individual workstations and servers on the network to provide the best possible protection against malware and to minimize the effort needed to manage and monitor their current status.

The ADNM download package includes the managed versions of both avast! Server Edition and avast! Professional Edition (for Network Clients), so they do not need to be downloaded separately. They can be used free of charge in "Demo" mode for a 60-day trial period, but by the end of the trial period, the appropriate number of licenses must be purchased.

How it works
The brain of the whole system is the AMS (avast! Management Server). This is where all the hard work is done.

The managed machines connect only to the AMS to download latest policies and to report their status and scan results. The Administration Console also connects directly to the AMS. The AMS is based on a SQL Database – either a dedicated MS SQL Server 2000, if available, or, for small and medium-size networks, on its lightweight version, MSDE 2000, which is part of the ADNM installation package. It is assumed that the AMS machine can connect to the Internet via HTTP protocol.

For larger networks, the AMS is expected to be installed on a dedicated computer. It is also possible to deploy multiple AMS' (each having its own database). These can then be instructed to replicate their databases on a regular basis, and also upload all scanning results to a dedicated AMS on which enterprise-wide reporting can then be carried out. The administrators can choose from two communication models used by the AMS and the clients: PUSH or POP. The POP model is suitable especially for larger networks and for networks with roaming users. Each AMS can scale up to tens of thousands of client computers, provided they are all connected by local area network.

The following sections summarize major ADNM features and benefits.

Hierarchical policy structure
ADNM maintains the list of managed computers in a tree structure. The key to effective management is to design and organize this structure to best suit administration needs. It is often ideal to build the tree so that it reflects the actual geographical and organizational structure of the network. In this way, it is quite easy to assign various administration access rights and policies in a natural way since most organizations' structure can be characterized by a tree with headquarters in the root and branch offices underneath. The tree definition can either be built automatically, or can be imported from an external source (in the form of text file). All security policies in the tree are by default inherited from parents to children but can be overridden (redefined) according to specific requirements.

Discovery and remote deployment
ADNM supports unattended, remote deployment of the avast! installation packages across the network, even spanning multiple domains. This is especially useful for initial product roll out. ADNM also supports periodic discovery of new machines on the network. These two technologies (discovery and remote deployment) can be combined together, resulting in constant search for new machines and automated, controllable deployment of virus protection software to these machines.

Reporting
One of ADNM’s top features is its reporting capability. ADNM provides a wide range of graphical and tabular reports suitable for both regular management reporting and daily network administration. Reports can either be generated directly to the database and consequently viewed in the Administration Console using the integrated Report Viewer, or can be exported to a variety of formats (including PDF, HTML and DOC) and saved to disk. They can even be automatically sent by e-mail to a designated recipient set – an especially useful feature for periodic management reporting.

As any with other ADNM task type, reporting tasks can be scheduled to run periodically at given intervals (daily, weekly etc).

Alerting
With the help of the avast! Notification Manager, the ADNM allows the network administrators to set up very powerful alerting systems. A number of notification objects are supported, such as sending of e-mail messages using SMTP or MAPI (MS Outlook), notification using the Windows popup mechanism (network message), printing the message on a network printer, SNMP traps, or even sending IM messages using MSN/Windows Messenger.

Automatic updates
Fast, automatic updates are one of the key points of effective virus protection. With avast, the updates are incremental, and only new data is downloaded, thus dramatically reducing the transfer time and bandwidth requirements. Typical size of a virus database update is approximately 20-80kb, a program update usually doesn’t exceed approx. 200-500kb. ADNM supports deployment of one or more "mirror servers" – local networked machines that act as storage for the update data and that are automatically synchronized with our system of online Internet servers. The individual nodes on the network then download the data from the mirrors. There can be any number of mirrors and these can also be set up to work in a hierarchical (tree) structure. A special feature of avast! is the PUSH updates. In the PUSH scenario, the updates are initiated directly by our servers (without polling); they result in the mirror servers quickly responding and performing the necessary synchronization. The system uses the SMTP/POP3 protocol as transport layer (i.e. classic e-mail). The technology is protected by asymmetric ciphers and is resistant to unauthorized misuse.

Security
The AMS maintains a system of users and user groups, and their access rights. Each object (be it a task, computer, schedule, event, alerting object or anything else) has an access control list, in which it is possible to set up who can access it and who can’t. This allows the main administrators to narrow down the view of local administrators only to the objects they’re responsible for, without risking any unauthorized changes in the policy settings outside their scope. All communication between the AMS and the console is encrypted by the industry-standard SSL protocol to ensure maximum security. The AMS identifies itself to the console by a digital certificate (either an administrator-supplied certificate or an ad hoc self-signed one) to prove its trustworthiness. Only after a proper encryption channel is established credential data is transferred over the network.

Support for notebook users
Roaming machines always represent a great challenge for management systems. They belong to no specific LAN (office), they connect to the corporate network more or less randomly, they are in general not directly addressable and their users are often trying to bypass restrictions set up on their machines by system administrators. ADNM was designed from the very beginning with notebook users in mind.

Communication between AMS and the clients is always initiated by the clients (POP system), overcoming the not-addressable issue. As soon as a notebook connects to the corporate network, no matter in which branch office (or even if it’s via VPN over the Internet), new policies and updates are automatically downloaded and applied, before the potentially unsafe machine can cause any harm. If the corporate network is unavailable but it’s still possible to access the Internet, the updates are grabbed directly from our Internet servers.

avast! BART CD
The avast! Bootable Antivirus & Recovery Tool (BART) CD is a breakthrough in the field of administration tools! In short, it is a bootable CD, giving you the capability to detect and remove virus infections on a computer. All this can be done fast and reliably, without the risk of spreading the infection any further. But the BART CD can do much more! It also contains tools for editing registry files and a tool to check and fix disk errors.

The latest version of the BART CD can be used on all Windows-supported file systems, i.e. NTFS, as well as less common storage devices, such as SCSI/RAID. In general, it will work on any disk device that supports Windows XP. It can also be used on non-standard devices, such as those used on servers, by using the standard Windows XP driver supplied by the hardware vendor.

The BART CD also supports networking. After network support is started, NETBIOS and TCP/IP protocols will be available. It is also possible to map network drives. Just enter the path to the drive (in standard UNC format servershare) and select the letter to which the drive should be mapped. After the drive is successfully mapped, you can work with the network drive in the same way as any other (local) drive - e.g. it can be scanned by avast!

The BART CD is a tool no administrator should be without - or, for that matter, anybody who deals with the recovery of data on hard drives. The license model is specified as a multi-node license, which means when you buy one BART CD, you can administer multiple computers, provided the CD is used on only one computer at any one time, and only by a single user.

avast! Antivirus
The main, and most important component of the BART CD is a special version of avast! 4 antivirus. It is based on exactly the same kernel as other avast! 4 Editions, which has been certified by ICSA Labs and ensures excellent detection capabilities combined with high performance. It detects 100% of ITW viruses/worms (In-The-Wild) and also includes advanced Trojan horse detection. avast! also takes part in Virus Bulletin tests, having received the VB100 award many times.

In the latest version, the user interface of BART avast! antivirus has been completely redesigned. A wizard has been added to the interface to guide you through all the settings. The settings allow you to turn on the scanning of archives (compressed files), and much more.

Sometimes, for instance, it may be undesirable to write to the hard disk (for example, if this would overwrite deleted files that you would like to restore somehow). Therefore, for operations requiring disk storage (e.g. unpacking archives to a temporary folder), BART avast! antivirus enables you to specify where such files should be stored.

The version of avast! antivirus, included on the BART CD, is able to repair virus infections. If avast! detects a virus it is able to repair, control is given to a special module that performs the first phase of the repair process. The user is then asked to start the operating system from the hard disk. The second phase of the repair process is performed here - the infected files, together with all references (such as registry associations), are removed. For security reasons, it is recommended to perform the third phase after another test from the BART CD.

A key feature of the BART CD is the way it handles updates (especially of the virus database). It includes a Builder that works on your Windows operating system (any version) and downloads the most recent versions of the BART CD components (Internet connection is required).

The Builder then creates an ISO image which has to be burned onto a CD (ISO images are standard input files in most modern CD burning software). Since the virus database updates are rather frequent, it is recommended to use re-writeable CDs.

In emergency cases, it is possible to use the updated virus database directly from the BART CD - by loading it from a diskette.

All programs on the BART CD work with UNICODE characters, so they are fully functional even in an environment where standard code pages are not enough (Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Arabic, and also some European languages).

Registry Cleaner
The Registry Cleaner will help you find and fix problems and correct inefficiencies in on-disk Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 registry hives. It also provides ways to recover the registry following virus attacks.

The program is highly configurable and enables different registry cleaning tasks to be run.

Junk File Remover
The Junk File Remover utility will help you find and delete unnecessary files that waste space on your hard drives. It can also empty system caches, such as Temporary Internet Files and IE history.

It features very fast scanning and reliable fixing of any problems found.

avast! Disk Checker
Disk Checker is a powerful tool for searching and repairing disk errors. It is quite similar to the ScanDisk tool or chkdsk.exe, supplied with the Windows operating systems.

You can select either standard or thorough tests. The thorough test additionally performs a sector check. It is capable of finding bad sectors on your disk and marking them as such.

The program works both with hard disks (including SCSI and RAID) and removable media.

Data Shredder
The Data Shredder allows you to erase files in such a way that it is impossible to recover them. When you delete a file using standard tools, only the reference to its data is removed from the system allocation tables and the file's clusters are marked as unused, but no actual erasing is performed until another file overwrites the area on the disk where the original file was stored. There are utilities capable of tracing and restoring deleted files, therefore you should never delete files containing sensitive information in the regular way.

avast! Registry Editor
An absolutely essential tool for system administrators is the avast! Registry Editor. It gives you unlimited access to the Windows Registry files located on your hard disk (Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 only). The data in the registry can be both read and modified. Some administrators consider this tool a life saver!.

The program makes registry editing as easy as possible. It quickly scans all your local hard disks and tries to locate installed operating systems, together with their registry files. The operating systems found are presented by their name and root folder, thus avoiding the need to know the exact location of the registry files (usually OS-specific). Of course, it is also possible to map a specific registry file by entering its full path.

From the moment the registry is loaded, the program is (visually) similar to the standard Windows registry editor. Its user interface is intuitive and easy. The editor even makes it possible to load the data directly from a file.

Before opening any registry file, you can specify whether the file should be backed up. If you select this option, the backup will be created in the same directory as the original file. Every time you open a registry file, a new backup will be created. If there are too many backups present, the user will be prompted to delete the old ones.

Event Viewer
Event viewer is a utility similar to the original Event Log Viewer included with Windows. It also has a very similar user interface.

After selecting an on-disk OS installation to inspect, you can browse the event logs by selecting them on the left side of the main window. Records will be shown in the main list control. The main list control consists of columns that can be sorted by clicking on its headers. You can also add/remove or reorder the columns. Record details can be viewed by double-clicking on the record. While you’re in the Event Properties window, you can navigate through the records using the Next and Previous buttons.

Services/Drivers
The Services/Drivers applet lets you manage services and drivers that are installed on the system. It also lets you make basic changes to their configuration (such as startup type).

Command-line Interpreter
Even though the tools described previously are very powerful, sometimes it is necessary to go deeper into the operating system itself. In such cases, the BART CD contains a command-line interpreter, compatible with the standard command.com and cmd.exe.

Often it is enough to delete a single file (such as a broken driver) to solve your problem; however, the BART command-line offers you much more! It has the full support of batch files; it also fully supports the XCOPY command, including all its parameters (as in the case of Windows XP).

Another key feature is the ability to run your own programs. Most Windows programs can be started in BART and you can therefore use your favorite recovery tool to restore deleted files or formatted partitions directly from the BART CD.

Servant Salamander
The BART CD also includes the popular Servant Salamander file manager. Servant Salamander makes it easy to work with files on your drives. In addition to basic functions, such as moving, copying or deleting files, is also offers advanced operations, such as searching files according to many criteria (including searching by content), group renaming, archive support (compression, decompression) etc.

The user interface is split into two halves, each one showing the content of a (possibly different) directory. Drag & drop operations are also supported.

Simple text editor
To make working with BART even easier, a simple viewer/editor of text files (Notepad-style) has been included.

This tool can be useful, for example, to view the report files generated by avast! antivirus, or to view/edit the user log files.

The program supports both ANSI and UNICODE character sets.

BART CD Shell

All available programs are presented using a simple shell that makes it possible to start the program easily. In addition, it displays the current state of the applications, license information, etc.

By exiting the shell, you end your work with the BART CD, and the computer is restarted.

avast! antivirus for Linux/Unix Servers
avast! for Linux/Unix Servers is an antivirus solution for the more and more popular Linux and BSD environments. Considering its robust design and mail scanning support, it is primarily intended for Linux (or BSD) based servers; it can be used on desktop computers as a desktop solution, but pricing assumes server usage.

Thanks to its flexible daemon architecture, avast! for Linux/Unix Servers can be used for both filesystem and network traffic scanning, such as real-time monitoring of mail (SMTP).

avast! for Linux/Unix Servers features an antivirus suite, which integrates the avast! antivirus kernel, and is designed to be used on a UNIX-like operating systems. The suite consists of a command-line scanner, resident scanner running as a daemon and a client for accessing the resident scanner.

Antivirus kernel
The antivirus kernel of avast! For Linux is identical to the one for Windows systems, which means that all high-end features typical in an AV kernel for Windows, are included in Linux version too.

The latest version of avast! antivirus kernel features outstanding detection abilities, together with high performance. You can expect 100% detection of In-the-Wild viruses (viruses already spreading between users) and excellent detection of Trojan horses with minimum of false positives.

The kernel is certified by ICSA Labs; it frequently takes part in the tests of Virus Bulletin magazine, often yielding the VB100 award.

As avast! for Windows , avast! engine for Linux features outstanding unpacking support too. It can scan inside almost same number of archives as under Windows, with exception of MAPI, CAB, ACE, CHM, 7ZIP and NTFS streams. Following archives can be scanned: ARJ, ZIP, MIME (+ all associated formats), DBX (Outlook Express archives), RAR, TAR, GZIP, BZIP2, ZOO, ARC, LHA/LHX, TNEF (winmail.dat), CPIO, RPM, ISO, and SIS. It also supports a number of executable packers (such as PKLite, Diet, UPX, ASPack, FSG, MEW etc.).

Automatic updates
Updates of virus database are another key need in virus protection. In the current version, the updates are not incremental. When the virus definition file is changed, it is necessary to download and replace the whole VPS file.

Command line scanner
Experienced users will appreciate a classic on-demand scanner, controlled from the command line. It allows scanning of files in specified directories and both local and remote volumes. Of course, the command line scanner also works on volumes mounted over network.

The program is very flexible; it accepts a lot of additional arguments and switches. It is able to generate extensive report files that can be used for analysis.

The scanner is able to run in STDIN/STDOUT mode to use it as a pipe filter. This mode is intended to be used in shell scripts.

Background scanner
The antivirus daemon running on background is intended for intensive usage. The daemon serves to other applications on the system, third-party applications can access the antivirus daemon by UNIX sockets. The daemon can be used in a specific directory under specified user account. A client for accessing the antivirus daemon is part of the installation package.

avast! PDA Edition
avast! PDA Edition is designed to protect pocket devices (PDAs) from viruses. The importance of PDAs is growing every day and it is quite likely that these devices will soon become a target for new virus attacks. With such devices having better and better connectivity, such an attack is getting easier to realize.

avast! 4 PDA Edition currently supports the following PDA platforms:

Palm OS
Windows CE (incl. SmartPhone Edition)
Windows Mobile 5 (PocketPC)
Scanning kernel
We have developed a special "pocket version" of the scanning kernel, with the following features:

Small size and memory requirements
High speed, and so a quick response, even on slower CPUs
A typical scan of the whole pocket device (with 16-128MB of memory) only takes a few seconds, therefore it's possible to run it on a regular basis.

Specific detection capabilities: avast! PDA Edition detects only viruses (or any other malicious code) written for the target environment (code capable of running on the given OS). This guarantees a small size of the antivirus deployment. Even though it would be possible to detect all known viruses, even on a PDA, this would tend to make a large deployment footprint on a small device, when the purpose of the antivirus product is to protect the pocket device primarily; in other words, memory requirements, size and speed are more important here than the detection of viruses for other platforms.

Reports & logs
avast! PDA Edition can create report files with a detailed description of the scanning process: what was scanned, what was the result, etc. This can be important for later reference, or just to make sure that all the requested files were scanned.

avast! PDA Edition features an integrated log viewer (note: not included in the SmartPhone edition, to minimize the product size).

Updates
An important part of any antivirus system is the capability to quickly react to new infections (updates of the virus database). avast! PDA Edition features a special updater able to download and install new updates.

To download the updates, avast! PDA Edition is able to use all standard means of data transfer for mobile devices (GPRS, for example), thus, it is fully integrated into the "pocket environment". The size of transferred data is usually just a couple of hundreds of bytes, so the (often quite slow) communication lines are not stressed in any way. Updating via ActiveSync is also supported.

Product sizes
avast! PDA Edition is optimized for size and speed. As a result, avast! PDA Edition for Palm OS is approximately 30KB; avast! PDA Edition for Windows CE is about 200KB. The virus database currently does not exceed 1kB.
